It’s the time of year for wearing new pj’s (dinosaur ones here obviously), hot chocolates, cosy cuddles and a good story before bed.
So, naturally we were excited to read Frank’s First Christmas from The Adventures of Frank and Diesel series. We were kindly gifted our copy in exchange for this review, however all thoughts are my own.

Before reading the story to Stanley and James I let them look at pictures on my phone, why?…because The Adventures of Frank and Diesel stories written by Melanie Slack are based on two larger than life characters, Melanie’s dogs! Here they are:
Once Stanley had ‘met’ the characters he was keen for me to get started on the book.
The story is in large print which is great for first readers and yet it is still a reasonable length for parents. So, (if you’re lucky) another might not be required to get them off to sleep.
The writing style is softly rhyming and has a lovely rhythm which in my experience really helps at bedtime.
We experienced, along with the illustrated versions of Diesel and Frank, all the great things about the Christmas festivities from decorating the tree and carol singers, to hanging stockings and listening out for Santa.
I was worried that the story wouldn’t hold James’s (22 months) attention and to be honest it didn’t, but he still enjoyed pointing and saying ‘dog‘, ‘hat‘, ‘cake‘ (mince pie) and ‘snow‘ so it didn’t really matter.
Having two (very different) doggies to get to know is brilliant for preschoolers who can’t read the book for themselves. The illustrations by Katie Green tell the story perfectly alongside the narrative.
This is a lovely book, excellent for building the anticipation of Christmas in little ones at this time of the year.
Snuggle in and enjoy!
